"The Tenth Kingdom" is a fantasy based in the world of faery tales …but this isn’t a children’s fable. In fact, the characters are adults whose lives are drastically altered when the Evil Queen of the Fourth Kingdom (the successor Snow White’s stepmother) escapes prison.

In an alternate universe, a waitress (Virginia) is lead, along with her father (Tony), through a gateway by a dog (actually the Heir to the Throne). They are closely followed by Wolf, a deeply conflicted animal-human hybrid, and three bumbling trolls. The dog, Prince Wendell, is desperate to get his form back and resume his place as ruler of the Fourth Kingdom while Wolf is intent on wooing Virginia (who doesn’t trust him at all). Meanwhile, Virginia and Tony only want to find the Mirror that will transport them back to their home, but the Nine Kingdoms has other plans…. Here, magic is just as ordinary as breathing, and the stories the Grimm brothers brought us are real. With each step toward the Mirror, the quartet faces new obstacles that only a fairy tale could provide. I wasn't anticipating watching this movie when it first aired on NBC in 2000. In fact, I missed the first half-hour. I was far more interested in

"Leprechauns" that was airing that same month. When I came home, my parents were both watching it. They were so intrigued that I decided to watch it as well, and I was stunned. The scenery, the dialogue, the character development...it was all astounding. The special effects blended in well and were believable. I found myself enthralled. And so, I know own the DVD (the most comprehensible version I could find) and the book, and I watch it several times a year.
