'Serenity' 2005 Universal Pictures starring Nathan Fillion and Gina Torres Length: 119 mins
Well, I went and saw this movie called Serenity. I rolled my eyes, thinking a Western in Space was too corny, and maybe we should see Corpse Bride instead. Neither Garry or I had seen Firefly, the cancelled-early TV series by Joss Whedon (sp?), but the almost- fanatical devotion of its fans was a little...scary. And that's coming from a confirmed Sci-Fi geek and LOTR nut! :D
So...my review of this film is that anyone can see it, whether a fan of the TV series or not - you don't have to know ANYTHING about the back story to enjoy this film. Beautifully paced, it was perfectly edited so that two hours blew by like 20 minutes. Great effects, fine costuming, good story with surprises. LOTS of action, but not extremely gory. Nice Bladerunner nod, too.
I highly recommend this film - it was so good that I'd be willing to watch it twice more back to back, and I haven't felt that way since ROTK. Now of course we have to see the series which is on DVD. It's already on its way via Amazon.com and I look forward to seeing that once October 31 rolls around and I can breathe again. :D
I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this movie.
