'Discovering Witchcraft Complete: Journey Through the Elements and The Mysteries' 2 DVD Set. Janet Farrar, Stewart Farrar and Gavin Bone. 2005 Callaighe Films.
'Discovering Witchcraft Complete' is a double DVD, produced by Andy Highfield, leading us through the major tenets of Wicca. This said, it is stated by Janet Farrar that she no longer calls herself Wiccan, but simply a witch.
A new initiate, Corina, is introduced to Wicca by Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone, with cameo appearances from Stewart Farrar filmed before his death in 2000. The first part of the DVD follows Corina as various aspects of the religion are explained or demonstrated, interspersed with elaboration in conversation with one of the three experienced Wiccans or members of their coven. This culminates in a dedication ceremony welcoming Corina into the Craft.
The latter part continues the theme, but more directly introduced by the Farrars and Bone. Included here are an exploration of the history of Wicca and Janet and Stewart Farrar delivering 'The Charge of the Goddess', whilst discussing some of its points. The second DVD concentrates on the Mysteries, including 'Drawing Down the Moon' and Persephone's descent into the Underworld.
For those new to Wicca, I would recommend this as compulsory viewing. For those a little more long in the tooth, it is still valuable, not only as a return to basics exercise, but as a source to learn new things or see from another angle that already known. It's certainly provided me with food for thought. Those with a love of all things Celtic will also enjoy this DVD, as the incidental music and scenery are all Irish.
