Weekly Discussions

Every week, a list member introduces, by e-mail, a subject (formally) for the group to discuss. While this doesn't stop us discussing anything else in the meantime, it does provide us with a way to pool all our knowledge and experience, thoughts, debates etc. on all things pagan. 'Oldies' and Newbies alike learn a lot from this.

Usually, it's the discussions afterwards which truly inform, as these introductions are precisely what it says on the packet - introductions. However, here you will find this week's introduction and links to previous ones.

FAQ About Weekly Discussions

So you've ended up volunteering to introduce a weekly discussion and now you're panicking... panic ye not! Here are some points about it:

* You are simply introducing a topic for discussion, acting as an MC, if you like. The rest of the Grove will be running with various points and fielding questions about it, once you've opened the floor. You are not required to be an expert on your subject. Or, as Roxanne put it:

'I guess I think of the discussions as an opportunity to ask the questions. And help people focus on the topic throughout the week. We get a nice discussion going were we all can benefit and learn from the comments.'

* There's no standard way to write your introduction, some are short, some are long; some have reams of facts and figures in them, while some are particularly personal takes on the subject; some are very general and some pick out a single specific aspect. Really the important thing is you saying 'Ok, Grove, this is what we're talking about this week...', the rest is just the detail. (Though they would be a bit on the boring side if that's ALL you wrote!)

* What if no-one joins in your discussion? Very unlikely! LOL However, it's always good to ask a couple of questions, as this gives people something to specifically reply to. But don't afret, you will get a reply.

* Does it have to talk about the Pagan side of things? No. Just write about whatever you want to write about, in whichever way comes to you.

* Does it have to go on the website? No. Though it's better to mention this before you post. How it works is that once it's posted, Mab picks it up from the e-mail and creates the web-page, without checking anywhere first. This is because you will get an off-list e-mail the week before from Anna asking if all is well, are you still able to introduce your subject, and have you got any worries, questions etc. You will have the opportunity then to run past what you have written, for reassurance purposes, though you don't have to. One of the questions asked is: is it ok for your introduction to go on the website? If you say no, then Mab will be informed and won't add it.

* What if I forget about it? You'll be e-mailed a week before (see above). If, by Sunday, there's no response, the Mods will have someone on standby to jump in for you. If you haven't posted by Tuesday, the standby will post their topic. Similarly, if, when you get your 'is everything ok?' e-mail, you can't do it, a standby will smoothly leap in and the Sunday announcement will be for their introduction, and they'll post as normal on Monday. There really is no pressure to contribute, honestly! You are on the list because you volunteered and you can un-volunteer at any time. :-D

* My spelling/grammar isn't good... don't worry about it. Any of the Mods will spellcheck it for you, if you would like them to, before it's posted to list; and Mab spellchecks it before it goes onto the website. It doesn't have to be perfect English, as long as it can be read; but it will be perfect English by the time the website public see it. :-D
