Weekly Discussions

Greetings Witchgrovers old and new……I’d like to introduce you all to a new feature that I’d love to see take off! Each week we will be introducing a new topic of discussion and we’d like to spend the week focusing (not entirely, mind) on these in the hopes that we can all learn from each other.

One discussion leader will introduce the topic while during the week people are invited to write their thoughts, questions and even detractions – one of the joys of discussion is that there are times we can disagree and learn new sides to each issue!

The Gods Amongst Us

When was the last time you called upon the Gods? When was the last time you truly felt the power of the God in your circle?

The tendency in Wicca is to see the Goddess as separate, dominant, and alone. God is the subservient divinity to whom small recognition is paid in some rituals. It is entirely understandable that from a background of culture that has denied the Goddess for so long, that the pendulum should swing the other way. To allow this to happen is just as unhealthy as the original mistake.

The God and Goddess are equal parts of a whole. Their presence among us is unwavering. If we travel through life with one eye closed, we will only see what we expect to see. And one-eyed we will often stumble and fall.

For various reasons, there are times when either the male or the female is given prominence in our spiritual practice. To help a woman become pregnant, to call on the Goddess is only sensible. To aid a man achieve fatherhood, the God is invoked.

Green Man by Kate

While we can view any of the various divine identities on their own, it is in conjunction with the polar opposite that the drama and beauty of creation becomes particularly apparent.

God tramping through the forest as the Green Man, epitomising virility in the form of the horned one, or protecting in the form of a warrior, exudes a unique power. The Goddess as Earth Mother in nature can be just as powerful. But when we bring the two forces together in our circles, our meditations, and our invocations, then the resulting vortex of energy is much greater than the total of the energy separately.

Most of us have been raised in a patriarchal environment, and in the case of men it has resulted in the denial of our feminine side. For most women, they only have their feminine side, and it has been distorted to become equated with weakness. The response to our history that many of us in Wicca have totally focussed our way upon the energy of the Goddess.

For each gender, to realize the power of our complete being, we must bring the Gods back into our lives. We need to recognize the male and female divinity within, and draw upon both energies in our circles.

In conclusion, not only is OK for a man to be a man, it is essential for the well-being of humankind and our planet. It is only when men walk the earth strong and proud as expressions of the Gods, that we can truly come together with the women who walk as Goddesses.

Love and Bright Blessings

Laurence
